Atmospherics that help your lighting package to shine or create a mysterious mood. An absolute necessity for some lighting elements (some intelligent moving heads, lasers). Some venues will not allow because they have a special type of smoke detection system, but it's rare and it's best to double check.
NOTE ABOUT SMOKE DETECTORS: Haze and Fog machines are different in how much they obscure. A hazer is there to give the light something to grab onto in the air. Fog machines create the full billowing you might see on Halloween. Foggers are more likely to set something off than hazers. Both will work safely with fire alarms that are Rise of Rate of Temperature sensitive but are not recommended for venues with Particulate smoke detection. Some venues may even have detectors in the ductwork. The Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) or the Fire Marshall can disable the particulate sensors of the venue if deemed appropriate. This is a common practice in most theaters.
As a general rule, fog is going to be fine in older buildings with heat sensors or mercury bulb sprinklers (red glass bulbs). These are triggered by heat, which haze/fog doesn't generate.
Ionizing smoke detectors, beam detectors, or CO2 detector systems will need a quick check, and you can isolate if needed via the MIMIC panel or equilvalent. Regions have specific requirements for this, please consult your venue to see what type of system they have.
