There are some weddings where we get to share a lot about the event and others, like this one, where non-disclosure agreements and party behavior might prevent us from sharing too many pictures. You know it’s going to be something truly memorable.
Suffice to say, that this was an absolute honor to be invited to perform for this couple and their assembled friends and family.
Taking place at Motorco in Durham, this venue is well known for it’s kickass shows and dive-bar flair. It’s the perfect place to cut loose, celebrate, and bring a unique vibe to an event like a wedding that, for some people, can feel a bit stodgy.
This couple, Mark & Kate, was anything but traditional, stuck-up, stodgy, or too focused on the forest to see the trees. They did their wedding the way they do their life – freewheeling and powerful (and well organized!)
Kate is an educator, podcaster, and creative artist, and Mark is a scene-defining DJ whose exploits on the decks have earned him praise across the Carolinas and beyond.
Their guest list included a veritable who’s who of certain scenes (bass heads, we’re looking at you) and the number of DJs in attendance might have spooked a great many DJs. But you know who wasn’t spooked, intimidated, or walking away from an opportunity to shine? Stylus.
Playing to discriminating listeners is what we’re here for. That’s why we DJ for so many DJs. When a DJ gets married, pay close attention to who they’re brining in – it says a lot about what they’re going for. DJs and audiophiles will take the sound equipment, presentation, and energy of the performance to heart where a great many people might not even know how to bridge the conversation.
Luckily, with Stylus, they never have to worry.
The day began by setting up the equipment. You’ll notice that we’ve got two subs and two tops resting on the stage, low, so that they’re not interfering with the ceremony pictures or giving us feedback. Normally you don’t want the speakers BEHIND the microhones but we had everything dailed in and there was no danger of a messy ceremony.

The groom was a little nervous before the cermony but I was there to make sure he was calm and ready to go before he went out to let the women he loves more than anything else in the world seal her fate to his. This is one of my favorite groom’s pictures in a hot minute, it says so much about his personality.

Finally, it was time to get married!

Once they’d made their vows, it was time for photos with Dave Severance Photography and their guests started making sure the bar knew they were there. The amazing staff at Motorco Music Hall was phenomenal to work with. They bent over backwards to make sure the couple and their guests were happy. I hope we get to do a lot more shows at this venue.
