The Top 20 Wedding Dance Songs for Your Party.
1. “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” by Whitney Houston (1987)
Whitney’s iconic anthem is a surefire way to fill the dance floor with joyful energy. The number one song is always an interesting one because it says a lot about the ‘real’ American party – this is the MOST concensus song in the country – the one that will make the most people (on average) happy.
Why It Works: It’s nostalgic, fun, and irresistibly danceable. The upbeat tempo and Whitney’s powerful vocals create a vibrant atmosphere that draws everyone to the dance floor. Whether it’s your grandparents or your best friends, this track has universal appeal and it’s an equal blend of exuberant sing along grandiosity and it’s nostalgic without being cheesy or kitch.
Fun Fact: This track won the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 1988.

2. “Dancing Queen” by ABBA (1976)
A wedding dance floor staple, this ABBA pure disco classic always gets people twirling. The fact that I can still drop this song in a peak hour club on the strip says a lot about its staying power and how popular the movie “Mamma Mia” was with a certain demographic.
Why It Works: It’s upbeat, nostalgic, and universally adored. Its cheerful melody and singable lyrics make it an anthem of celebration, and its disco beat gets everyone’s feet moving, no matter their age or dancing skills. Infectiously good, you’re not alone if this song makes you want to spread your arms and twirl.
Fun Fact: This song was ABBA’s only number-one hit in the United States. ABBA had 20 songs on the Hot 100 between 1974 and 1982, including four top 10 hits and 14 top 40 hits.
3. “September” by Earth, Wind & Fire (1978)
A powerhouse wedding classic that will stay near the top of the Most Requested Wedding Dance Party Songs list long after many others have faded, this disco-funk favorite always delivers thanks to its fun blend of melody and sing-along placeholding genius.
Why It Works: It’s a timeless tune that bridges generations on the dance floor. The infectious groove, brass-heavy instrumentation, and feel-good lyrics ensure an electric atmosphere every time it’s played.
Fun Fact: The famous “ba-dee-ya” lyric was originally a placeholder that the band decided to keep.
4. “Mr. Brightside” by The Killers (2003)
An indie rock favorite that didn’t really hit in the US when it was originally released, this anthem brings excitement and energy to any wedding even if the subject matter is a little less positive than many of the other entries, we have the UK to thank for why this song is still around – their passion for the track ended up driving it into our collective consciousnesses.
Why It Works: Its infectious energy gets everyone singing and dancing. The raw emotion in the lyrics combined with the driving rhythm makes it a perfect choice for everyone to belt out together in unison. Plus, just like “Henry the VIII” by Herman’s Hermits , “Second verse, same as the first…”
Fun Fact: “Mr. Brightside” was The Killers’ debut single and has remained on the UK charts for over 300 weeks.
5. “Yeah!” by Usher feat. Lil Jon and Ludacris (2004)
This high-energy club hit is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. It’s started getting some shade from some DJs who feel like they’re too edgy to play a song people want to hear, but chances are you’re not hiring them for your wedding. This is one of those songs that, when it first came out, you could drop it twice in a row (like Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow” or Lil Uzi Vert’s “I Wanna Rock.”)
Why It Works: Its danceable beat and iconic chorus make it a wedding favorite. The combination of Usher’s smooth vocals, Lil Jon’s hype energy, and Ludacris’s catchy rap sections creates a dynamic track that gets everyone pumped. I’ll often skip straight to the Luda verse after the end of the first chorus, but to each their own.
Fun Fact: This song spent 12 consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
6. “The Cupid Shuffle” by Cupid (2007)
This line-dancing favorite ensures that everyone hits the floor because it was designed that way.
“I was a 19-year-old Blues singer touring with the SOS Band and Lenny Williams when I recorded the song,” Cupid told NewsOne. “Everywhere we would go, before we’d start the show, we’d get the crowd going with a line dance. I saw how the crowd was reacting and I wanted to create a modern-day line dance.”
Why It Works: It’s easy to follow and gets guests moving together. The structured steps create a sense of community and fun, making it a perfect choice for all ages.
Fun Fact: He freestyled the lyrics (nailed it!) and Cupid broke a Guinness World Record for the largest line dance to this song in 2008.
7. “Shut Up and Dance” by WALK THE MOON (2014)
This energetic hit never fails to get the party started. This band from Cincinnati Ohio took their name from the Police song “Walking on the Moon” and is a perfect song to use for your dancefloor or for your grand entrance to the wedding reception.
Why It Works: Its upbeat tempo and catchy chorus make it perfect for group dancing. The song’s playful lyrics encourage spontaneity and fun, ensuring everyone lets loose and enjoys the moment.
Fun Fact: The song was inspired by an actual dance floor moment experienced by the lead singer. He was at the Funky Soul Saturday DJ dance party in L.A. and was waiting in line for a drink and it was taking forever and he was getting frustated when his girlfriend in “a backless dress and beat up red Chucks“, abruptly invited him to dance with her, inspiring the song’s title.
8. “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey (1981)
This anthem is perfect for late-night singalongs and closing out the night. For years this was a default ‘last dance song’ for many couples, but it’s been replaced by Mr. Brightside in North Carolina since 2019.

A singalong classic that never goes out of style.
Why It Works: It unites guests in a feel-good moment of celebration. Its call-and-response style makes it interactive, ensuring everyone feels part of the fun. Also, especially in North Carolina where a huge influx of people from the New England area. Another call & response song (like ‘Shout’ by the Isley Brothers), it’s got an easy approach and a big finish and can even people sitting at tables can participate!

Notes about the 10 Top Wedding Dance Songs
There’s a lot we can learn about the top 10 wedding dance songs. One song is from the 60s, two are from the 70s, two are from the 80s, four are from the 2000s, and only one is from the 2010s. That implies that the people making the requests are prioritizing songs from their childhood and earlier. There’s a power to the music we grew up with that makes connecting with family and friends at a wedding that much more fun. It’s also possible that the list represents the songs they think their family and friends are going to love.
11. “Party in the USA” by Miley Cyrus (2009)
This pop hit is always a crowd-pleaser, especially for younger guests and is a great example of how some songs seem to encapsulate an entire era, especially with its radio-friendly shoutouts to other artists like Jay-Z and Britney Spears – letting us do some fun blends in the mix.
Why It Works: Its fun, singable chorus keeps the energy high. The lighthearted vibe creates a carefree atmosphere perfect for dancing.
Fun Fact: Miley Cyrus has said she didn’t initially connect with the song but grew to love it after its success. Because of course she did…
12. “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!” by Shania Twain (1997)
This empowering anthem is perfect for celebrating with your besties (and certainly a bit more appropriate for a wedding than “Before he Cheats” by Miranda Lambert.
Why It Works: It’s fun, lively, and gets everyone singing along. The song’s playful energy encourages guests to let loose and have a good time.
Fun Fact: This song was inspired by Twain’s experiences of gender inequality in the music industry.
13. “Hey Ya!” by OutKast (2003)
This funky track blends humor, rhythm, and energy to keep the floor buzzing. Let’s take a moment to appreciate just how hard it is to write a song that make my mom and my friends will vibe out to. It’s way harder to write a song that appeals cross-genre and cross-generation than it is to write a song in a very narrow genre.
Why It Works: Its genre-blending style appeals to all generations. The playful lyrics and infectious beat make it impossible not to dance.
Fun Fact: The phrase “shake it like a Polaroid picture” boosted sales of Polaroid cameras.
14. “Love Story” by Taylor Swift (2008)
A romantic pop classic that’s perfect for capturing the magic of the day and makes full use of the 9th grade english literature class with shoutouts to William Shakespeare and Nathaniel Hawthorne.
Why It Works: Its heartfelt lyrics resonate with couples and guests alike. The sweeping melody creates a fairytale-like atmosphere.
Fun Fact: Taylor Swift wrote this song based on a real-life romance her family disapproved of. Here’s to hoping she gets it right one day (if she hasn’t already). We occassionally DJ ‘Taylor Swift vs. Her Exes’ parties.

This modern line dance hit gets everyone up and moving and came out at the same year as Lady Gaga’s “Just Dance” and Taylor Swift’s “Love Story”, and just a few months later than the “Cupid Shuffle.”
Why It Works: Its interactive nature ensures no one stays seated. The funky beat and simple instructions make it accessible for everyone. There’s also lots of room for extra flair if you’re so inclined.

This wedding staple is perfect for getting everyone on the floor. Chances are your aunts have been practicing this and the wobble to get ready for your wedding.
Why It Works: It’s easy to follow, ensuring no one feels left out. The interactive nature makes it a hit with guests of all ages. Remember, the reason that Chubby Checker’s “Twist” was such a hit was that it was a dance that didn’t require formal dance training like the foxtrot or the waltz, which meant that grandma and your little cousin could do it too. It’s kinda the same with many line dances today, although don’t get too ahead of yourself by thinking that Hoedown Throwdown, Walk it Out, or the Dougie have quite the same mass appeal.
Fun Fact: The song was originally created as an aerobics routine for DJ Casper’s nephew who was teaching at Bally’s in Hyde Park, Chicago. You’re also going to notice that there’s a part 1, part 2, and part 3. The original dance is based around the classic house anthem Plastic Dreams by JayDee.
19. “Tennessee Whiskey” by Chris Stapleton (2015)
This soulful ballad adds a touch of Southern charm to your playlist. If you’ve got one slow song you’re going to play at your North Carolina wedding, this might just be the one you want to play.
Why It Works: It’s perfect for a slow dance moment or winding down the evening. The heartfelt lyrics and rich melody create a romantic, intimate atmosphere.
Fun Fact: This song was originally recorded by David Allan Coe in 1981, and the Stapleton version is almost a note-for-note recreation of Etta Jame’s song “I’d Rather Go Blind”.

This dance hit is great for closing out the night with an upbeat and emotional vibe.
